Riddell Fiddles Newsletter 1

Hi folks

This is a new mailing list - a sort of e-Newsletter of events and things happening with Riddell Fiddles.   It is in response to some of the friends of Riddell Fiddles who are not players but like to attend events and who said they would like an occasional update of what we are doing.  I have included some people in this mailing list who I think may be interested.  If you do not want to receive these emails please email me back and I will remove your name from the list.  Similarly, if you have friends who might be interested in being on this email list then just get them to email me and I will add them in.   A lot of the information will be included on our website anyway but you might like this Newsletter as a reminder.

I propose to include details of any events at Riddell Fiddles and may include a link to some other local events you might be interested in (unless I get swamped with items!).   Any suggestions or feedback are welcome.

In putting this email together I realised just how much traditional and folk music there is available in the Borders and we are encouraged by the support we get from our friends and acquaintances across the region.   We would in turn like to encourage you all to support the efforts of everyone involved in putting on all of the events mentioned below.

Riddell Fiddles General Update - August 2009 - no.1
The summer holidays have been a busy time for many Riddell Fiddles members - a fantastic tour to the Vancouver area of Canada where we took part in two camps - The Sabir Sisters camp at Abbotsford and The Sunshine Coast School of Traditional Music at Roberts Creek - and also performed at various places around the Vancouver area of B.C.  There are many pictures and videos on the Internet - here are a few links - www.riddellfiddles.co.uk  or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=977PLsmYXaA or  http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewAlbums&friendID=438292218 - you can expect some of the new tunes we learnt to be included in our repertoire very soon.

As well as the trip to Canada various members have taken part in other events around the Borders such as Flying Folk at Paxton and Peebles and others have returned to the Fiddle Frenzy at Shetland.

Riddell Fiddles is continually developing and our new term starts on 23rd August.  Due to demand we are expanding.   This means a move to the Argus Centre at Selkirk to allow more room and we have a great line-up of tutors for the regular players.  As well as our regular tutors - Sheila Sapkota, Amy Geddes, Catriona Macdonald, Shona Mooney, Donald Knox and Kim Hendry we also have workshops arranged with Tom McConville, Roxanna Sabir and Jenna Reid.  We will continue to develop ceilidh bands for juniors and adults.

We are also offering fortnightly 'drop-in' classes aimed at Intermediate level for those who cannot manage to attend every week - tutors are still to be arranged depending on demand (starts 13th September).    We are also offering open classes in traditional Stepdance on a fortnightly basis, open to all ages (starts 30th August) - details are now on the diary page of our website (http://www.riddellfiddles.co.uk/diary.htm ) - but if you are interested in these then please get in touch.
